Our mission is to create an environment that nurtures, while enhancing the social, physical and mental health of children and their families. By providing a tailored, effective and culturally sensitive model, we hope to impart the tools needed to surpass the barriers they may encounter throughout their journeys.
The Sheltering Tree Child and Family Services will provide quality, effective and nurturing care for children, youths and their families. Our vision is for every child and youth who enters our program to feel important and valued. We want to provide children and youths in our care with more than just a house to live in, we want to provide them with a family, a community and ultimately a sense of belonging.
The founding members of the Sheltering Tree Child and Family Services found this field to be extremely rewarding, however, they became frustrated by some of the gaps they observed in other programs supporting foster children and youth in our communities. These gaps involved a deficit in the type and quantity of internal programming offered to the children and youth as well as a deficiency in the quality and quantity of training and support offered to the all members of the front line staff, including Foster Parents, Internal Case Managers and Child and Youth Workers.
These observations became the driving force behind the development of this program. The founding members took their extensive knowledge and experience working with children and youth to help address these gaps. They created The Sheltering Tree Child and Family Services, which is a program that supports and empowers children, families, and the entire front line staff by offering unique services and opportunities, viable, inclusive programs and comprehensive, continuous training to better prepare all members of the team for whatever challenges they may encounter.
Our program is adaptable to the individualistic needs of the child and family and is designed to involve biological families where appropriate. In addition, we hope to provide every teenager or young adult who leaves our program with a successful exit strategy with ongoing support after they leave.
At The Sheltering Tree, our philosophy is to provide well rounded, inclusive services for children and families of all ages, genders, abilities, races, ethnicities, national origins, colours, sexes, sexual orientations, gender identities or religious expressions. We will endeavor to fit our internal programming and support to the individual rather than forcing the individual to fit into the program.
